ISLAMABAD:
While acknowledging the army’s sacrifices for the country, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has registered protest with the prime minister, with its secretary-general saying that Pakistan Army has “crossed its constitutional lines”.

In a letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the JI Secretary-General Liaquat Baloch has alleged that the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release condemning JI chief Munawar Hassan’s statement and directly asking him for an unconditional apology was a grave violation of the 1973 Constitution.
“Pakistan army’s spokesperson directly addressing a political and religious party is against the constitutional provisions and there is no such precedent in the past,” said Baloch in his letter to the premier on Wednesday.
He said the 1973 Constitution binds every individual and institution to act according to its constitutional role.“JI never hesitated in expressing its grief over the martyrdom of innocent civilians and all army soldiers and officers dying in terrorism related incidents,” said Baloch.
He said the JI leaders in person conveyed their condolences to the families of many martyrs of Pakistan Army. “How can a simple press release by ISPR wipe out all these efforts of Jamaat-e-Islami,” he questioned.
Complaining about the army the JI leader said the armed forces should not supersede the resolutions and policies of the public representatives .
Baloch said the entire debate on Munawar Hassan’s statements in a TV interview was an attempt to distract attention from the recent drone attack that killed Hakimullah Mehsud, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief.
“We appeal to the government, the military and all other stakeholders to focus on the more important issue of bringing peace to Pakistan instead of getting distracted by spoilers’ attempts,” said the JI secretary-general.
